Batteries Directive Review

The European non-ferrous metals industry is a key materials supplier and recycler for portable, automotive and industrial batteries. Metals in batteries play an essential role in Europes low-carbon transition, notably for e-mobility and energy storage. European demand for strategic battery metals is expected to increase significantly in the next decade.

The European Commission is now assessing whether the Batteries Directive meets its objectives and contributes to the general objectives of the EU environmental policy.

The Nickel Institute supports the Eurometaux Feedback on this review.

ETS indirect costs compensations

The European non-ferrous metals association (Eurometaux) called on EU institutions to find an adequate solution for compensating indirect costs during the trialogue negotiation on the post-2020 Emissions Trading System. Full and predictable indirects compensation is needed to protect electro-intensive industries from Carbon Leakage.

Interface between Chemicals, Products and Waste Policy

The European Commission announced in the Commission Communication "Closing the loop - An EU action plan for the Circular Economy" the intention to undertake an "Analysis and [prepare] policy options to address the interface between chemicals, products and waste legislation, including how to reduce the presence and improve the tracking of chemicals of concern in products" as a mean to develop policies that can deliver circular economy through a seamless flow of materials recycled from waste as suitable raw materials back into the economy.

Nickel Institute supports the Eurometaux position paper on this topic.

EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS)

The nickel sector contributes to jobs, know-how and industrial growth. Under the EU's ETS rules, it is essential that our industry is correctly evaluated to avoid artificial distortions of competition. A correct assessment is a pre-requisite for us to continue making our contribution to effectively meeting the EU's CO2 emissions reductions targets. Nickel Institute supports the PRODCOM Alliance and Eurometaux positions on ETS.

Circular Economy

Nickel Institute welcomed the 2014 European Commission package on Circular Economy and stresses its support of resource efficiency as well as re-use, recycling and recovery. Nickel is highly recyclable and can be fully recovered, recycled and re-used without loss of quality. Nickel is, and will be, an essential element to achieve a resource and energy efficient Europe.

Better Regulation in chemicals management

Establishing the right regulatory environment and promoting a favorable climate for entrepreneurship is certainly a matter of priority for businesses, both for major companies and for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The organisations forming the Cross Industry Initiative are very supportive of the Better Regulation policy in general, and the REFIT exercise in particular.

Industrial Renaissance

Nickel Institute welcomed the 2014 EU Communication for a European Industrial Renaissance. Industry is crucial in order to boost competitiveness, sustainable growth, and to strengthen recovery and foster innovation in Europe.

Sustainable Consumption and Production & Sustainable Industrial Policy

A competitive manufacturing industry is crucial in order to reach and go beyond the objectives of the EU 2020 strategy, building growth and jobs in a smarter and more sustainable society.. With its capacity to contribute to energy- and resource-efficient solutions, the Euroopean non-ferrous metals industry is a key pillar for the future EU sustainable economy.

Nickel Institute believes nickel makes an important contribution to the delivery of recyclable, durable, reusable and material efficient products which allow great environmental savings.
