Selection and Use of Stainless Steel and Ni Bearing Alloys in Nitric Acid (10075)

Even though most stainless steels do not resist 100% HN03, they are resistant to corrosion by the 60% to 70% concentrations that result from ammonia/air oxidation processes, and the low-carbon or stabilized stainless steels play a major role in the production and handling of nitric acid over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations. This article examines the selection criteria for several stainless steels and nickel-bearing alloys in the production and handling of nitric acid and in its use, both in the production of ammonium nitrate fertilizers and as an acid mixture with HF for descaling.
