Increasing numbers of waste incinerators are being installed to reduce energy use and pollution. These can generate both electricity and heat for process or district heating applications. Heat and corrosion resistant nickel-containing materials may be needed to withstand the high temperatures and aggressive conditions in the incinerator and gas cleaning systems.
Organic waste can also be processed by anaerobic digestion – similar to composting – to produce methane which can then be used for electricity generation or heating. See Biofuels.
