Celebrating 100 Years of Stainless Steel

From small beginnings a hundred years ago, stainless steel has grown to be an integral part of our lives. Utilised primarily for its corrosion resistance, stainless steel is also found in applications where strength, innovation and aesthetics are important.

Transportation

In an effort to reduce greenhouse gases, hybrid and electric cars have increased in popularity. Nickel plays an important role in the batteries of these vehicles - helping to reduce the emissions generated by the cars we drive.

Safe Use of Nickel

The Nickel Institute aims to educate persons who are responsible for the health maintenance of workers exposed to nickel, its compounds and alloys about the potential hazards associated with exposure to various forms of nickel. It strives to instruct them in the safe handling of nickel-containing substances in the workplace.

Anish Kapoor's "Cloud Gate"

Anish Kapoor’s stainless steel sculpture Cloud Gate located in Chicago’s Millenium Park measures 20 metres long and 10 metres high. Cloud Gate's mirrored finish is made from a seamless series of 168 highly polished stainless steel plates and its elliptical shape reflects the activity and lights of the park and the surrounding city skyline.

Recycling Stainless Steel Scrap

The best way to make new nickel-containing stainless steel products – products that are cost-effective, environmentally safe and energy-efficient – is to start with nickel-containing stainless steel. That means scrap stainless steel is the first and best 'resource' for steelmakers.
